Capacity Building:
Fellowships and multidisciplinary training in oncology and palliative care, including international exposure opportunities.
System Strengthening:
Establishing a cancer registry, improving clinical efficiency, and providing technical support for organizing an annual cancer conference in Nigeria.
About Federal Medical Center Ebute-Metta
Established in 1964, the Federal Medical Center, Ebute-Metta, began as the Department of Health Services to meet the healthcare needs of Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) staff and their families. Several decades later, in 2005, the hospital was formally transferred to the Federal Ministry of Health and designated as a Federal Medical Center (FMC).
Nigeria’s Network of Federal Medical Centers
Today, there are 24 FMCs across Nigeria, delivering quality and accessible healthcare to communities across different states. These centers provide both general and specialized medical care, particularly in areas where access to tertiary health services is limited. In addition to ambulatory and emergency services, FMC Ebute-Metta operates specialist clinics that offer expert consultations across a range of disciplines, including cancer care.
Building on a Decade of Global Oncology Partnerships
This collaboration with FMC Ebute-Metta closely aligns with our 2024–2029 strategic plan and represents a seamless progression in our mission to expand and enhance global cancer care. We recognize the importance of sustainable partnerships in improving access to cancer treatment. Our first collaborative global oncology project began in 2013, when Binaytara helped establish the first bone marrow transplant center in Nepal through a joint venture with the UIC Center for Global Health, the University of Illinois Hospital and Health Sciences System, and the Civil Service Hospital. Building on that foundation, in 2016, we launched a palliative care training center in Mehsana, Gujarat, India, to meet the growing need for compassionate end-of-life care.
A Shared Mission to Reduce Cancer Disparities
Now, in 2025, driven by the visionary leadership of Dr. Binay Shah, President and Co-Founder of Binaytara, we are extending this initiative to Lagos, Nigeria. Dr. Shah, together with colleagues Drs. Daniel Ezekwudo and Rasaq Olaosebikan have had critical discussions virtually across states in the U.S. to shape this initiative. United by a shared commitment to reduce cancer disparities and bring life-saving care closer to those who need it most, they have laid the foundation for this new partnership. Reflecting on years of effort and discussion that led to the signing of this MOU, Dr. Shah noted, “This collaboration is another important step in our mission to improve access to cancer care in under-resourced communities.”
