2023 Lifetime Achievement Award: Dr. Edith P. Mitchell (1948–2024)

Recognizing a Lifetime of Leadership, Service, and Equity in Cancer Care

Dr. Edith P. Mitchell, MD, MACP, FCPP, FRCP (London), was a trailblazing medical oncologist and tireless advocate for equity in cancer care. Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology, Dr. Mitchell served as Clinical Professor in the Department of Medicine and Medical Oncology at Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University and as Associate Director for Diversity Programs and Director of the Center to Eliminate Cancer Disparities at the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center.

Throughout her distinguished career, Dr. Mitchell worked to ensure that all patients—regardless of race, income, or geography—had access to high-quality cancer care. A former President of the National Medical Association and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (London), she was also a retired U.S. Air Force Brigadier General, embodying service and excellence in every facet of her life.

Her legacy continues to inspire generations of clinicians, researchers, and advocates dedicated to closing the gap in cancer health disparities.

2023 Rising Star in Health Equity Award: Dr. Subodh Mallik

Honoring leadership in advancing equitable cancer care

Dr. Subodh K. Mallik, board-certified in Internal Medicine, received the 2023 Rising Star in Health Equity Award for his leadership in improving cancer care for underprivileged communities. Originally from Nepal and now practicing in Texas, Dr. Mallik has combined his clinical expertise with a passion for health innovation to bridge global care disparities.

As Chief Medical Information Officer at the Binaytara Foundation Cancer Center in Janakpurdham, Nepal, Dr. Mallik has led the implementation of KareXpert, one of South Asia’s first fully paperless electronic health record systems. His efforts are helping create a model of efficient, technology-enabled, and patient-centered cancer care for all.
