OncoBlast: Bridging Educational Gaps in Oncology Through Gamified Learning

Abstract

Background

Many healthcare providers struggle to access traditional continuing medical education (CME) due to time constraints, expense and travel time. To address these barriers, Binaytara developed OncoBlast, a gaming app delivering accredited gamified oncology education. By integrating interactive quizzes with expert content, OncoBlast enhances engagement, knowledge retention, and clinical decision-making, providing flexible learning opportunities for providers worldwide.

Methods

We analyzed app usage data from May, 2024 to Feb, 2025, including user demographics, geographic distribution, and engagement metrics. User location data was mapped to assess OncoBlast's global reach. Demographic profiling was conducted based on gender and country income classification. Engagement was measured by calculating the mean number of games played per user.

Results

OncoBlast has been downloaded 477 times, with 418 downloads on iOS and 59 on Android. Users in HICs are significantly more likely to use iOS compared to those in LMICs (OR = 0.18, p = 6.2e-08). Among the 167 users who completed at least one gamified activity, 40.2% identified as female and 59.8% as male (Figure 1). Among them, 28.3% were from LMICs, while 71.7% were from HICs (Figure 2). The highest user concentrations were in North America, with 66.47% of users from the United States, followed by 10.40% from Nepal, 4.04% from India, and 4.04% from Turkey (Figure 3). In the U.S., the largest user bases were in Washington, California, and Texas (Figure 4). Users played an average of 4.91 games, reflecting strong engagement (Figure 5).

Conclusion

OncoBlast has successfully reached healthcare providers in 23 countries, demonstrating its potential as a scalable oncology education tool. While the majority of users are from HICs, engagement from LMICs highlights growing interest in digital learning. The app's gamified approach supports busy professionals by offering flexible, interactive CME. Expanding outreach, particularly in LMICs, could enhance equitable access to oncology education globally.
