How Oncology Equipment is Changing a Nigerian Hospital

Three Tools, Two Organizations, and One Goal: Better Cancer Care, Everywhere

The urban hospital Federal Medical Center Ebute Mette is situated in the highly connected southern bay of Nigeria’s capital city, Lagos. Given the city’s near-20 million residents, the need for cancer care is high. But to meet that need, the hospital needs infrastructure, equipment, and personnel.

Following the signing of a landmark memorandum of understanding in 2025, Binaytara worked with FMC Ebute Metta to start laying the foundation for quality, scalable cancer care. That started with equipping the hospital with critical oncology tools.

The first piece of equipment was a chemotherapy hood, or biosafety cabinet. The very properties that make chemotherapy drugs effective against tumors make them toxic to healthy systems—so the healthcare providers preparing the drugs put themselves at risk every time they treated a patient. Patients, on the other hand, received drugs prepared in an unsterile environment, potentially exposed to environmental contaminants.

FMC Ebute Metta’s new chemotherapy hood is enabling doctors and nurses to deliver a lifesaving treatment to around 912 patients a month—more safely for the care team and patient alike.

We also sent over an infusion pump and a syringe pump. Different treatments need to be administered differently—whether over time or all at once, or highly precise or generalized. Having the right tool is key for providing chemotherapy safely.

The new pumps are serving around 304 patients a month. Combined with the chemotherapy hood, that’s over 1,200 patients every month receiving better cancer care. It’s as simple as this: we believe access to the best treatment shouldn’t depend on where you live.
