Biography

Lawrence Fong, M.D. is the inaugural Bezos Distinguished Scholar and director of the Immunotherapy Integrated Research Center at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle since 2024. Previously, he was a Distinguished Professor at UCSF for over 20 years, where he founded the Cancer Immunotherapy Program and was the founding co-director of the Parker Institute of Cancer Immunotherapy at UCSF. He received his B.A. from Columbia University and his M.D. from Stanford University. As a physician-scientist, Dr. Fong has been involved in both pre-clinical and clinical studies of multiple cancer immunotherapies including immune checkpoint inhibitors that are now FDA-approved. His laboratory has identified multiple immunologic mechanisms that underlie response and resistance to immunotherapies that could enable novel treatments. He is a founding senior editor for the Journal of Immunotherapy of Cancer and for Cancer Immunology Researchˆ. He is the recipient of an NIH Outstanding Investigator Award and an elected board member of the Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer (SITC).
