For Dr. Carraway, receiving this recognition alongside Dr. Martha Mims and Dr. Deepti Behl is a true honor.

She sees the award as deeply connected to her core beliefs about medicine, teaching, and community. “I feel fortunate to be an oncologist and believe in the dedication to medical education and hope that it will lead to a better future for all patients diagnosed with cancer,” she reflects.

Dr. Carraway holds an unwavering belief in younger generations and their capacity to transform cancer care. She views education and learning as essential to delivering the best possible outcomes for patients.

Perhaps most telling is her belief in the power of community, a space where questions are welcomed, and curiosity is encouraged. In her view, this kind of environment not only fuels innovation but also ensures that clinicians are equipped with the practical knowledge they need to care for others.

Dr. Hetty Carraway's Impact on Binaytara's Nashville Summit on Hematologic Cancers

Dr. Carraway’s relationship with Binaytara began with a single invitation. “My first interaction with Binaytara was when I gave an invited presentation at their Hematologic Malignancies Meeting in Nashville, Tennessee,” she recalls. That first meeting planted seeds that would grow into a long-standing partnership. Year after year, she returned, eventually being invited to serve as co-chair of the National Summit on Hematologic Cancers alongside Dr. Shaji Kumar of Mayo Clinic, Dr. Nitin Jain of MD Anderson Cancer Center, and Dr. Navneet Majhail of Sarah Cannon Transplant and Cellular Therapy Program at TriStar Centennial.

What began as a speaking invitation has evolved into a leadership role that shapes the content, caliber, and direction of one of Binaytara’s flagship educational programs.

Why Medical Education Is the Foundation of Better Cancer Outcomes

When asked to reflect on her most memorable contribution, Dr. Carraway did not point to a lecture or a curriculum milestone, but to something more enduring: the people.

“The most impactful experience of these educational programs is the people and the community we build together.”

She speaks passionately about Binaytara’s mission to deliver high-quality cancer care to all patients and to reduce cancer health disparities, including its ambitious vision to build a hospital in Nepal and serve communities in need. “The mission to build a hospital in Nepal and reach communities in need is an amazing vision,” she says, adding her belief that every contribution, no matter its scale, matters in the pursuit of that goal.

What Drives Dr. Hetty Carraway's Commitment to Oncology Education

Looking forward, Dr. Carraway carries a clear and compelling dream for the next 5 to 10 years in cancer care.

“I dream of a time when we can ensure high-quality cancer care to patients in need, irrespective of where they are located.”

She is clear-eyed about the barriers that remain: delays in time to diagnosis, uneven access to medications, and systemic hurdles that slow the path to treatment. But her resolve to overcome them is equally evident. “I hope we can continue to decrease these disparities and align the mission to deliver care to all patients in need,” she says. It is a vision that aligns seamlessly with Binaytara’s own, and one that will continue to drive her contributions to the organization for years to come.
