Partnership aims to launch health camps that provide free cancer screenings and education to underserved communities in Nepal.

JANAKPUR, NEPAL / BELLEVUE, WA — Engage Nepal, a nonprofit led by former U.S. Ambassador to Nepal Scott DeLisi, has partnered with Binaytara to expand critical healthcare initiatives in Janakpur, Nepal. Through this collaboration, Engage Nepal will provide funding to Binaytara to establish a health camp program in 2025, providing free cancer screenings and expanding access to life-saving medical care. Thanks to this partnership with Engage Nepal, the health camps will scale to serve an estimated 1,500 people across four villages.

The health camps will leverage Binaytara’s local staff based in Janakpur, its partnerships with the local government and community volunteers, and its cancer hospital facility that is equipped to provide chemotherapy, surgery, palliative care, and other essential cancer care services. Engage Nepal’s funding will supplement Binaytara’s contributions to cover costs for medical supplies, volunteer training, community outreach, and logistical support.

“These health camps will have a lasting impact by not only providing early detection of cancers when they are more treatable, but we can also educate communities about prevention behaviors and early detection options to protect themselves and their loved ones,” said Ambassador (ret.) Scott DeLisi, Executive Director of Engage Nepal. “We are proud to support an initiative that aligns with our mission to uplift marginalized communities in Nepal and we are eager to see the results and impact from these camps.”

The camps aim to prioritize women, older adults, and high-risk groups. Services will include:

  • Breast Cancer Screening: Clinical breast examinations and education on self-examination.
  • Cervical Cancer Screening: Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid (VIA) for cervical cancer.
  • Oral Cancer Screening: Oral examinations to detect precancerous lesions.
  • Lung Cancer Awareness: Information dissemination and risk assessment for lung cancer, particularly among smokers.
  • Treatment: Participants in the camps who are suspected of having cancer will be referred to Binaytara’s local cancer hospital for further diagnosis and treatment.

“Early detection saves lives, yet many people in rural Nepal do not have sufficient access to basic cancer screenings,” said Dr. Binay Shah, President of Binaytara. “We are honored to join forces with Engage Nepal to reach more people who need these services most. The vast majority of patients we see at our hospital don’t come to us until they are at advanced stages of cancer. These health camps allow us to raise awareness about the importance of early detection and empowering communities with that knowledge.”

Both organizations share a deep commitment to sustainable healthcare development in Nepal and view this partnership as a step toward long-term improvements in the region’s medical infrastructure.
