Record-High Abstract Submissions to the National Summit on Hematologic Cancers

Research abstracts are in for Binaytara’s biggest conference of the year: the 2026 National Summit on Hematologic Cancers. The Summit garnered an impressive 94 abstract submissions, originating from a global authorship. The submissions represent innovative research in the field of hematologic cancers, including basic science research, clinical research, quality-of-care research, outcomes research, case reports, and case series.

The submissions will undergo rigorous review by the abstract committee in the coming weeks, overseen by Abstract Committee Chairs Vinod Pullarkat, MD, from City of Hope, and Martha Mims, MD, PhD, from Baylor College of Medicine.

$250,000 in Hematology Awards: Who Walks Away with Funding?

The abstract submission window has closed, but for authors of accepted abstracts, the lapsed deadline comes with a new opportunity.

“Authors of accepted abstracts will be invited to submit their research ideas and compete for a research grant,” Abstract Committee Co-Chair Martha Mims, MD, PhD, explained. “We have $25,000 awards for fellows and $50,000 for junior faculty.”

Mims is referring to the Shaji Kumar Hematology Research Awards—$250,000 in total funding, realized as multiple $25,000 and $50,000 awards, to be allocated at the Summit in October. Authors of accepted abstracts will be invited to submit a research proposal, related to their submitted abstract or not. From this pool, the conference leadership will identify who will compete in Impact Pitch, a Shark Tank-style pitching challenge in which participants pitch their proposed research to a panel of field-leading hematologists. These hematologists—who are to the session what the Sharks are to Shark Tank—will determine who walks away with funding to change the practice and care of hematologic malignancies.

What’s Next? Conference Highlights

The National Summit on Hematologic Cancers will take place in Nashville, TN, on October 16 - 17, and will feature a host of draws for hematology professionals from all backgrounds—even beyond the Impact Pitch and its accompanying high-stakes awards. The meeting is organized around the “Gray Zone,” or clinical cases where optimal management is unclear. Participants will engage in open discussion to move toward practical solutions and consensus statements that will benefit academic hematologist-researchers and community practitioners alike.

The conference will also feature an AI in Hematology plenary with Thomas Jefferson University’s Dr. Aziz Nazha, and a CAR-T Resistance Deep-Dive with MD Anderson Cancer Center’s Sattva Neelapu. The Summit’s setting, Nashville, is an emerging hematology hub: Vanderbilt’s robust Malignant Hematology and Stem Cell Transplantation division is training the next generation of Tennessee hematologists. Tennessee Oncology, one of the largest community-based cancer care specialists in the nation, is celebrating half a century of patient care. Sarah Cannon Cancer Network, which is integrating services and cutting-edge technologies into its affiliated hospitals, has a strong presence on the National Summit on Hematologic Cancers Planning Committee—Sarah Cannon Physician-in-Chief of Blood Cancers Dr. Navneet Majhail is one of four conference co-chairs.

The Shaji Kumar Hematology Research Awards—named for Summit Co-Chair Shaji Kumar, MD—come at a time when US research funding hovers below historic precedent,

“As I meet with a number of colleagues in hematology and oncology, I constantly hear about issues of lack of funding for research,” Dr. Binay Shah, Binaytara president and co-founder, explained. Binaytara has pledged $450,000 in research funding in 2026, $100,000 of which has been awarded.
