Meet Asha Yadav, Binaytara Laboratory Technician in Nepal

Asha Yadav: Laboratory Technician, Community Educator, Advocate

When Asha Yadav joined Binaytara in 2024, she had learned about the organization on social media and resonated with the mission: improving access to quality healthcare in underserved communities. It addressed a need she had seen firsthand.

“I am from Mahottari District, Loharpatti Municipality–3, Mahadaiya,” Yadav shared. “Growing up in a rural community, I saw many people struggle due to limited healthcare services and a lack of health awareness. Witnessing these challenges firsthand inspired me to pursue a career in healthcare.”

One onboarding later, Yadav joined the Binaytara team as a lab technician, doing critical work for the organization’s on-the-ground healthcare initiatives. She ensured that samples were collected and handled with the care proper protocol demanded as they were brought to the lab. Within the lab, “I am responsible for processing and analyzing specimens with strict adherence to safety and quality control standards, ensuring reliable and precise results,” Yadav explained. “I also maintain meticulous laboratory records and prepare comprehensive reports, providing timely documentation and clear communication of findings to the medical team.”

This work was vital during Binaytara’s 2025 mobile cancer screening initiative in Nepal’s Madhesh Province, which saw over 600 people receive a general health screening and 274 women get screened for cervical cancer (many for the first time in their lives). Yadav’s participation went far beyond the on-paper scope of her work. “A key aspect of my role involves direct patient interaction,” Yadav said of the mobile camps: “guiding, reassuring, and educating participants to reduce anxiety and help them feel comfortable throughout the screening process. In combining technical expertise with compassionate engagement, I contribute both to the accuracy of medical outcomes and to the dignity and confidence of the communities we serve.”

Insights from the Field

Yadav had proved herself up for the task of advancing women’s health in Madhesh Province. But did the program live up to her ambitions? Yadav put forth a resounding affirmative.

“Binaytara’s HPV and cervical cancer awareness and screening program has had a transformative impact on women’s health in the community,” she said. “At first, many women were hesitant to participate, believing that screening was unnecessary because they felt healthy and had no symptoms. Through focused awareness campaigns and meaningful community engagement, the program helped them recognize that screening is essential for their well-being and that early detection can save lives.”

Yadav interacted with many women who convinced her of the program’s effectiveness. One stuck with her: a woman who had never undergone cervical cancer screening, and was apprehensive—and, it struck Yadav, afraid. After Yadav counseled her, on both “the purpose and process of screening,” the woman agreed to participate; and when she got her results, she shared that she felt more confident and informed. She had gone from feeling too afraid to learn about her health to taking ownership. To Yadav, that’s the core of Binaytara’s work.

Now, as another round of cervical cancer screening camps are in the works this fall, Yadav is returning to the communities where she drove so much positive impact. To the lab, she once again brings together rigorous scientific standards; and to the field, she brings compassionate, evidence-backed counseling. Most of all, she brings a renewed conviction: “Community-based education and screening are essential to protecting women’s health, and these efforts must be sustained and scaled to achieve lasting impact.”
